Susan

Susan was named in loving memory of a good friend who sadly lost her mother.

She is such a special girl.

This year we got the chance to rescue some shetland sheep from the meat industry...we had limited numbers that we could save....and susan was not on the list...

We planned on saving 5 that were due to be killed in june...

Not an easy choice deciding WHO gets to live...

We made the horrendous decision, out of about 20 plus sheep.... :0(

But susan never left my thoughts....She was skinny, had a scruffy fleece and a broken horn ...the rest looked healthy and lovely fleeces.

Weeks later we had to go back to the farmers and we were told we could take one of the pet sheep .....I had no plans in taking more....but had to look in the pen of those destined for slaughter....

Lethal....
I took more males that i knew would be killed....The females had a chance at life as they would be bought for breeding ...but not susan as no one would want her

So yes susan came home with us...

Ww knew she was thin....but only discovered how thin when she was sheared...

It was a worry... Out of all the sheep she was the friendliest. Pretty amazing really. She would come to you and lick your face. Her thinness was such a worry, so we decided to bring her close to home with the "Special Needs sheep "  this meant we could keep watch, give her extra feed and also lots of love. She bonded with so many people who truly loved her.
She was the under dog, the one no one would want ....the worthless sheep....
To us she was priceless

Being thin meant we needed to try to get weight on her...So being close to home she got extras....It was a slow process with very little weight gain...so we started to look into alternatives and she seemed to pick up a bit...
Then one day she took a turn for the worst...She started to froth and i began to worry....
we used all our knowldge learnt over the years and called our vet....
She started to bloat and i knew it was not good...I stayed with her and massaged her belly ..i could hear bubbling sounds...like air being released...
We gave a baking soda...and finally olive oil....her belly started to deflate ....
I share this as what we did was life saving ...if you act fast you have a chance...

She started to perk up and fingers crossed we hope she has turned a corner

A few days later susan is sneaking into the on site pod to wake up the guests..

Everyone who has met her this summer has totally loved her

And my thoughts are
If susan does not make it....She has been loved so much in her short little life and she has touched so many hearts
