The "Sanctuary"

We are situated in Tranmire which is in Whitby, set in the heart of the National Parks North Yorkshire moors, a very picturesque part of the world. Our sanctuary is set within 50 acres of land and a good part of that is SSSI  "A Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) is a formal conservation designation. Usually, it describes an area that's of particular interest to science due to the rare species of fauna or flora it contains - or even important geological or physiological features that may lie in its boundaries".

A lot of the land was not maintained by the previous owners and we have been working hard with national parks to restore the areas. Last year we took on the huge task of redigging a main ditch that had over the years become blocked and created a swamp over the land making it unusable. The ditch has worked a treat but we still have more worh to do with the ditches this year to try and get the land working again as it is at present we would not feel comfortable letting our animals graze, but we are hoping by the end of this year we will of achieved enough to start working areas and bring back more plants and wildlife.
